The way our new City begins is critically important.  It is hard to overstate the potential long-term impact of the decisions we will make in the next few years.  We have to get this right.

The “to do list” for the first few months includes adopting a code of city ordinances, bringing zoning and our local ‘overlay’ under the City’s jurisdiction, hiring a highly qualified city manager, and implementing the means for collecting revenue.  We must develop a police force with a sufficient number of officers, select temporary City facilities, and maintain our parks, roads and drainage systems.  We must set ethical standards and practices for transparent government and citizen input.  We have big tasks to complete.

I am running for City Council because I feel my experiences – as an attorney, a nearly two-decade resident of Brookhaven, a past board member of my neighborhood association, and a neighbor active in the community – prepare me for these tasks.  I am running because I am confident I can do this job for you.  You can learn more from the biography page of my campaign website.

The ability to get things done matters, but equally important is the vision we share for Brookhaven’s future.  My goal, if you entrust me with this job, is to promote Brookhaven as a community, not just an area for commercial development.  We must have a thriving central cluster of mixed-use development, not big-box stores and strip malls with gigantic parking lots.  A prosperous center can generate revenue that we can use for our public safety and infrastructure maintenance.  Our parks are key components of any plan.  We should tie our core areas into the neighborhoods with pedestrian-friendly access.  We should take measures to ensure that our neighborhood streets do not devolve into surplus parking areas or cut-throughs.  Families, homes, and inviting neighborhoods: the vision we share embraces community.

I am ready to get to work for you.  I am ready to work so that our vision of a Brookhaven with a stellar quality of life becomes a reality.  The next step is your vote.  Please vote on Tuesday, December 4.  Thank you.

Neighbor to Neighbor: Why we support Kevin Quirk

Leadership for the new City of Brookhaven demands a range of skills: quick comprehension of the requirements, capacity for sustained effort, proven negotiating skills, and the ability to articulate a vision for the community.  Throughout the campaign leading to the November 6 election, I had the opportunity to evaluate my fellow candidates and consider who offered these leadership skills so necessary for the first District 3 representative.  Kevin has demonstrated the kind of leadership needed to give our new City a good start, and I endorse his candidacy without qualification.  I encourage District 3 voters to get out and vote for Kevin Quirk on December 4.  Let’s give him a mandate to lead us in the right direction!

All of us – Cityhood ‘Yes’ voters and Cityhood ‘No’ voters – have an enormous amount at stake.  This greater responsibility for our own future will have an immediate impact on the services we can expect and the taxes we will have to pay.

I support Kevin because he is clearly the most qualified candidate to lead our neighborhood through these challenges.  Consider his professional experience practicing law, add in his hands-on experience as an advocate on zoning and traffic issues that matter to our community, and then look at his nearly two decades of commitment as a resident and active and involved neighbor.  Our new City needs Kevin on the City Council.

On weekends and in the evenings since the elections began, you can see Kevin Quirk walking through the neighborhoods, knocking on doors, asking us what we think the priorities of our new City should be.  He talks about raising our expectations.

What a good sign it is that a person who seeks to represent us actually puts into practice the idea that our voices are important.  Kevin Quirk has worked hard to earn our confidence.

A key goal for the new City will be a good balance between development and investment on the one hand, and maintaining and fostering neighborhoods with high quality of life on the other hand.  That’s why the zoning “overlay” for our area matters; nobody wants our stretch of Peachtree to become a series of strip malls choked with traffic.   

Kevin understands the need to strike the right balance.  A wrong zoning decision could have a 50 or 75 year impact.  Kevin is committed to sensible enforcement of zoning ordinances that will encourage the investment and development needed to keep our “welcome mat” fresh and inviting, but without departing from the spirit of our plan to bring livable and high quality development to our area.

One of the tests of good government is getting your calls returned.  We want to get a response when we have an issue.  Having worked with Kevin Quirk in the past on neighborhood issues, we know first hand how responsive he is when addressing matters affecting our community.

We feel confident he will continue to be accessible as our City Council member.  We support Kevin Quirk because we want the person who represents our District 3 neighborhoods to be someone who will stay in touch.

Trust matters.  I’ve known Kevin and his family for many years, and his willingness to step up and take on the task of getting our new City up and running gives me a great deal of confidence in our future.

What is in store for our police and our parks?  Everybody wants a police force that can do the job, but will there be enough officers, enough patrols, and enough money in the budget?  As for parks, the potential is great, but we realize that the parks have not been well maintained, that capital improvements have been insufficient, and that parks represent a real opportunity for improvement.  We will have to make some hard choices.  That’s why trust matters.  I know Kevin Quirk, and I trust him to put our interests first.

In these political times I’m pleased to see someone like Kevin offer himself for public service.  Kevin is a neighbor, not a politician.  He understands “compromise” and “balance” are not dirty words, and I like the way he says that he is asking for the votes of Democrats and Republicans and Independents alike so that he will have a mandate to represent all of us.

I also like the way he has limited financial contributions to his campaign to a maximum of $100 per contributor.  I have confidence that Kevin will represent me and our neighbors and not be beholden to some special interest.

I like Kevin's diversity of knowledge and experience.  He majored in economics and has practiced law at the Department of Justice, at a very large law firm, and currently at a smaller law firm. I believe a variety of experiences gives a Council member skills needed for effective participation on the Council and for ultimately helping to build a City of excellence.

I also was struck, when I was running for City Council myself, by how concerned Kevin Quirk has been to give voice to every neighborhood’s issues.  He clearly considers it part of the job of Council member to grasp where we share concerns but also where they diverge.  He cares about our whole community.  He listens.

We have to be diligent, smart, and sensible in setting up our new City of Brookhaven.  Some residents voted “Yes” and some residents voted “No,” but all of us have become stakeholders, and the stakes are high.  This opportunity to form and manage a new City can mean services delivered more reliably and at lower costs, zoning and planning that preserves or improves our commercial and residential areas, and roads and parks that are better utilized and maintained.  Reaching these goals will demand hard work and staying on task, because an opportunity is not a guarantee.

I am running for City Council from District 3 because I dearly love Brookhaven, and I want to work for you to give the new City the best possible start.  The City of Brookhaven in general, and District 3 in particular, has a variety of people and a variety of challenges – from areas needing preservation to areas needing improvement.  That variety energizes me.  I offer you the same diligence, experience, and judgment I bring to my professional life.

As a community resident for nearly two decades, a former board member of the Historic Brookhaven Neighborhood Association, and a hands-on advocate on zoning and traffic issues, I have heard your concerns about the essence of our new City – neighborhoods and homes.  If honored with a position working for you on our new City Council, I will continue hearing your concerns and continue learning from you about Brookhaven’s needs and goals.
